If you are weighing a career in a Kendriya Vidyalaya or a Navodaya school, the first question is usually simple: what does a KVS teacher salary actually add up to in 2026? The answer depends on three things – your post (PRT, TGT or PGT), the pay level that post sits at in the 7th Central Pay Commission matrix, and the city you are posted to. This guide works through each piece using official figures, with the dearness allowance at 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026.
All numbers below are monthly, before deductions, and cover the period from 1 January 2026 onwards unless stated otherwise. The July 2026 dearness allowance instalment had not been announced as of 26 October 2026, so we have not assumed any figure for it.
How KVS Teacher Salary Is Built: Pay Level, DA and HRA
Teachers in central government schools are paid on the same 7th CPC pay matrix as other central civilian employees. Each post is attached to a pay level, and each level has 40 cells. A new recruit starts at the first cell of the level, and the stages within a level move up at roughly 3% a year.
On top of basic pay come allowances. The two that matter most for take-home pay are:
- Dearness Allowance (DA) – a percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year to offset inflation. On 18 April 2026 the Union Cabinet approved a 2 percentage point increase over the existing 58%, taking DA to 60% of basic pay with effect from 1 January 2026. The Department of Expenditure issued the implementing Office Memorandum on 22 April 2026.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA) – a percentage of basic pay that depends on the classification of your posting city. Since DA crossed 50%, the rates stand at 30% for X class cities, 20% for Y class and 10% for Z class. X class covers cities with a population of 50 lakh and above.
Employees occupying general pool government housing do not draw HRA, and other allowances such as transport allowance are paid separately. We have kept those out of the tables so that the comparison stays clean.
Pay Levels for PRT, TGT and PGT
The three main teaching posts sit on three adjacent pay levels. The entry and maximum figures below come from the 7th CPC pay matrix for civilian employees.
| Post | Pay level | Entry basic pay | Maximum of the level | Second cell (after one increment) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Teacher (PRT) | Level 6 | ₹35,400 | ₹1,12,400 | ₹36,500 |
| Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) | Level 7 | ₹44,900 | ₹1,42,400 | ₹46,200 |
| Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) | Level 8 | ₹47,600 | ₹1,51,100 | ₹49,000 |
The gap between a TGT and a PGT at entry is only ₹2,700 of basic pay, but the ceilings differ by ₹8,700. The bigger jump is between PRT and TGT: ₹9,500 at entry. That is why many primary teachers aim for TGT posts through departmental promotion exams once they are eligible.
Gross Monthly Pay by City Class in 2026
Here is what the entry basic pay becomes once DA at 60% and HRA are added. We have done the arithmetic ourselves from the official rates; it excludes transport allowance and any deductions.
| Post | Basic | DA (60%) | X city (HRA 30%) | Y city (HRA 20%) | Z city (HRA 10%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PRT | ₹35,400 | ₹21,240 | ₹67,260 | ₹63,720 | ₹60,180 |
| TGT | ₹44,900 | ₹26,940 | ₹85,310 | ₹80,820 | ₹76,330 |
| PGT | ₹47,600 | ₹28,560 | ₹90,440 | ₹85,680 | ₹80,920 |
Two things stand out. First, DA alone is now worth more than half of basic pay, so a revision of even two or three points moves the monthly figure noticeably. Second, the city you are posted to can swing gross pay by about ₹7,000 to ₹9,500 a month at entry level, which is worth keeping in mind when you list posting preferences.
If you want to compare these figures with pay in the wider economy, our guide to the average salary in India based on PLFS data is a useful reference point. For another central government profession on the same pay system, see our breakdown of nurse salary with DA and HRA.
Worked Example: A New TGT Posted to an X Class City
Take a newly appointed Trained Graduate Teacher who joins at the first cell of Level 7 and is posted to an X class city without government housing.
- Basic pay: ₹44,900.
- DA at 60%: 44,900 × 0.60 = ₹26,940.
- HRA at 30%: 44,900 × 0.30 = ₹13,470.
- Gross before transport allowance and deductions: 44,900 + 26,940 + 13,470 = ₹85,310.
Now compare this with the rate that applied before January. At 58%, DA on the same basic was ₹26,042, so the April decision added ₹898 a month. Because the increase was backdated to 1 January 2026, months already paid at the old rate are settled as arrears.
A handy rule of thumb follows from this: at TGT entry level, every single percentage point of DA is worth ₹449 a month. For a PRT it is ₹354, and for a PGT ₹476. When the next instalment is announced, multiply the change in points by these figures and you have your new DA without waiting for the pay slip.
After the first annual increment, basic pay moves to the second cell, ₹46,200. Under the pay rules there are two increment dates, 1 January and 1 July, and each employee gets one increment a year on whichever date applies to their date of joining or promotion.
The Current Recruitment Drive and What It Asks
The most recent direct recruitment round for both organisations was run by CBSE under Recruitment Notification No. 1/2025, with registration opening on 14 November 2025 and the last date set as 4 December 2025. The notification covered 14,967 teaching and non-teaching vacancies across KVS and NVS. The teaching posts included:
| Post | KVS | NVS | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| PRT | 3,365 | – | 3,365 |
| TGT (General) | 2,794 | 2,978 | 5,772 |
| PGT (General) | 1,465 | 1,513 | 2,978 |
| Principal | 134 | 93 | 227 |
| Librarian | 147 | – | 147 |
The examination fee was ₹1,500 for PGT, TGT and PRT posts, plus a ₹500 processing fee for every applicant; SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates were exempt from the examination fee but still paid the processing fee. Tier 1 was a 100-question, 300-mark paper covering reasoning, numeric ability, computer literacy, general knowledge, English and one modern Indian language. For PGT and TGT posts, the final merit list weighs exam marks at 85% and the interview at 15%.

What Is Still Uncertain
A few things will change the numbers in this guide over the coming months:
- The July 2026 DA instalment. No Cabinet approval or Department of Expenditure order for the rate due from 1 July 2026 had been published as of 26 October 2026. When it arrives, it will apply from July with arrears.
- Your exact cell. The tables use the first cell of each level, which is where a fresh direct recruit starts. Anyone whose pay is fixed differently will see different figures.
- Accommodation. If HRA stops because you take government housing, gross pay falls by the HRA figure in the table.
Treat salary figures on coaching websites with care. Many still quote DA at 55%, a rate that has been revised twice since, which understates gross pay by several thousand rupees a month.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the starting basic pay of a KVS TGT in 2026?
A Trained Graduate Teacher starts at Level 7 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, with a basic pay of ₹44,900 a month. With DA at 60% and HRA in an X class city, the gross comes to ₹85,310 before transport allowance and deductions.
What is the current DA rate for KVS and NVS teachers?
DA is 60% of basic pay with effect from 1 January 2026, following the Cabinet decision of 18 April 2026. The instalment due from July 2026 had not been announced at the time of writing.
How much more does a PGT earn than a TGT?
At entry, a PGT on Level 8 earns ₹2,700 more in basic pay than a TGT on Level 7. With 60% DA and 30% HRA, that becomes a gross difference of ₹5,130 a month in an X class city.
Do teachers in government quarters get HRA?
Generally not. The Department of Expenditure's HRA instructions say the allowance is not admissible to those occupying general pool residential accommodation, and it stops from the date an allotted house is handed over. Check with your school office how the rule applies to the quarters you are offered.
How often does a central school teacher get an increment?
Once a year. Pay moves to the next cell in the same level, which works out to about 3%. The increment falls on either 1 January or 1 July, depending on the date of joining or promotion.
Is the KVS and NVS recruitment for 2025 still open?
No. Registration for Notification No. 1/2025 closed in December 2025. Watch the official KVS, NVS and CBSE websites for the next advertisement.
Conclusion
A KVS or NVS teaching job in 2026 starts at a gross of roughly ₹60,000 to ₹90,000 a month, depending on whether you are a PRT, TGT or PGT and where you are posted. Basic pay is fixed by the 7th CPC matrix, but DA – now 60% – is the part that keeps growing, and the July 2026 instalment is still pending. Use the per-point figures in the worked example to update your own numbers the day the next revision is announced.
